What age does to a door

Older Hurlingham homes were built with heavy timber doors and mortice locks, and both have been through several decades of Highveld weather since. Timber takes up moisture through a wet summer and gives it back over winter, moving several millimetres across a year, and hinges settle under that weight.

The consequence is that a bolt which seated cleanly when the house was painted no longer meets its keeper squarely. The lock is asked to force the door into position every time it is thrown, and it obliges for years until it stops obliging.

There is a ten-second test that settles what you are dealing with. Open the door fully so it hangs clear of the frame, then work the lock with the key. If the bolt throws smoothly with the door open and fights you when it is shut, the mechanism is fine and the alignment is out. That is lock repair rather than replacement, and it costs a fraction of one.

Dust, rain and what they do to a cylinder

The Highveld year is hard on outward-facing locks in a very specific sequence. From about May the air goes dry and dusty, and fine grit works into every cylinder that faces the weather. The storms arrive from October and wash that dust into a paste, which then grinds the pins each time a key turns.

A cylinder that has been doing that for fifteen years is not going to be rescued by the household lubricant spray in the garage, which attracts more dust than it displaces and makes the next dry season worse. A dry lubricant made for locks is the correct product, and it is not expensive.

Where a cylinder is genuinely worn, replacement is the honest answer rather than a service. On Hurlingham's older hardware that is a reasonably frequent finding, and it is one of the more common reasons a call that started as a repair ends as a lock change.

The security gate over the front door is usually the worst affected of all, because it is fully outdoors and frequently running an internal-grade mechanism that was never specified for the job. A gate that needs two hands and a particular angle is not a quirk you have to accept.

Long ownership, and the keys it leaves behind

The other consequence of an established suburb is key history. A Hurlingham house that has been standing for fifty years has had owners, tenants, agents, gardeners, painters, a pool service and at least one neighbour who kept a set for a holiday. Nobody has ever counted.

That matters more than the grade of the lock. If you cannot answer the question of who could open your front door today, the cylinder is doing very little for you whatever it cost, and no upgrade fixes it.

It is the standard first job after a sale, and it is worth doing in the first week rather than the first year. The property has just been through an open house, a set of viewings and a handover, and that is the period when the number of keys in circulation is at its least knowable.

Mature gardens are the defining feature of this suburb and they are also, from a security point of view, its most awkward one. Established hedges and old trees mean a good number of doors here are entirely invisible from the street.

That changes where the money should go. On a door a passing car can see, a standard cylinder in a sound frame is usually proportionate. On a side or back door screened by twenty years of planting, the cylinder grade genuinely matters, because anybody working on it has time and nobody is going to notice.

The scullery door, the garage side door and the door onto a servitude are the usual suspects, and they are consistently running the weakest hardware on the property. Fixing that is the highest-value item on any list of lock upgrades worth paying for in a suburb like this one.

The frame, which almost everybody skips

On stock of this age the frame is more often the weak point than the lock, and it is skipped almost universally because it is invisible and unglamorous. Strike plates are frequently held by short screws biting into an architrave rather than reaching the structure behind it.

That means an excellent cylinder can be bypassed entirely by force going around it. The lock never fails; the frame does, and you end up paying for a lock, a strike plate and a carpenter instead of one of the three.

Longer screws reaching the stud and a reinforced strike plate cost very little and change how the whole door behaves under load. It is the cheapest genuine improvement available on an older house, and it belongs before any conversation about upgrading cylinders, not after it. Lockouts, and the twenty minutes that cost money

Heavy front doors that self-latch account for most of the lockouts we attend in Hurlingham. Pulling one closed with the keys on a hall table takes half a second and no carelessness at all, and it happens to careful people constantly.

Check every other door and window before concluding you are shut out, because sliders and back doors are forgotten more often than people expect. Then phone rather than improvise, because the improvising is where the cost appears. A card does not open a deadbolt but it will mark a frame; a screwdriver against a frame is joinery damage rather than a technique.

If a key has snapped in the lock, stop pulling at it. Pliers tend to push the remaining half deeper and score the cylinder on the way, converting a broken key extraction into a replacement. Left alone, the broken piece can usually be drawn out and the lock kept.

A lockout with twenty minutes of screwdriver in the frame becomes a lock, a strike plate and often a carpenter as well, and on an older Hurlingham door the carpentry is rarely the cheap part.

Planned work is cheaper than emergency work, always. If what is wrong can wait until Tuesday morning, say so and it is booked for Tuesday morning at a lower rate. That is simply what an unhurried appointment in daylight costs against a vehicle turned out at two.
