What we do

Opening a locked vehicle where the keys are visible inside it, where a door has locked itself, or where a key has stopped operating the lock and the spare is elsewhere. The work is non-destructive: the door is opened using tools designed for the purpose, and the vehicle is left as it was found.

Proof that the vehicle is yours is required before anything happens, exactly as it is at a locked front door. A registration document, identification matching it, or insurance paperwork all work.

What we do not do

We do not produce keys, which is worth repeating because it is the assumption behind half the calls. That covers new keys, replacements, programming transponders or remotes, and anything involving the immobiliser. This is not a limitation of the day — it is not a service this business offers at all.

If your key is lost entirely, or broken beyond use, we can still open the car so you reach your belongings but will not get you driving. In that situation a vehicle key specialist or your manufacturer's dealer is the right call, and phoning them first will save you a callout.

Modern vehicles and honest limits

Some vehicles cannot be opened non-destructively with any reasonable effort — the same honest limit that applies to certain high-security cylinders on a front door — particularly newer models with deadlocking and reinforced door structures. Where that is the case we will tell you on the phone if we can, and on arrival if it only becomes clear there.

We would rather turn down a job than force a door and leave you with a repair bill larger than the problem you started with.

The one situation we can help with

The job this page describes is narrow and it is worth stating precisely, because the alternative is somebody waiting an hour for a technician who cannot do what they need. We open vehicles that are locked with the keys inside them.

That is a mechanical problem: getting a door open without damaging the paint, the weather seal, the glass or the wiring inside the panel. On most vehicles it is a reasonably quick job and the car is exactly as it was afterwards.

It comes up constantly, usually in a shopping centre car park or a driveway, and frequently on a car that has been left running. Nobody needs to feel foolish about it. It is one of the more routine calls an emergency locksmith takes in a week.

What we do not do, and why we say so first

We do not supply, cut or programme vehicle keys of any kind. We do not work on transponders, immobilisers or rolling-code fobs, and we do not clone or replace remotes. If your key is lost rather than locked inside, this is not the page you need.

The reason is that modern vehicle keys are a specialism with its own equipment, its own subscriptions to manufacturer data, and its own liability. A locksmith who is set up for buildings is not set up for that, and pretending otherwise wastes your afternoon and risks your car.

So the honest answer, when the key is gone rather than shut in, is a vehicle key specialist or your dealer, and you will be told that on the phone rather than after somebody has driven out. Everything we actually do is on the list of building locksmith work.

Keys locked in, and what to tell us on the phone

Three details make the difference between a first-time opening and a wasted trip, and all three are things you already know standing next to the car.

Make, model and year, because door mechanisms differ far more between vehicles than most people expect and the approach is chosen before anybody leaves. Whether the vehicle is running, because that changes the priority. And whether anybody is inside it, which changes it completely.

Say the last of those in your first sentence if it applies. A child or an animal shut inside a vehicle on a Highveld afternoon is not an ordinary lockout, and nobody will think less of you for it. The dispatcher would far rather know at the start than at the door, exactly as with a house lockout.

Why forcing a car door is worse than it looks

The instinct with a locked car is a coat hanger through the top of the window frame, and it is worth understanding what that actually does before trying it on a modern vehicle.

The gap you are forcing is where the weather seal sits, and a deformed seal leaks for the rest of the car's life in a climate with Highveld summer storms. Inside the door panel there is wiring for the window motor, the mirror, the speaker and frequently the airbag sensor, and a wire hooked out of position is a fault that appears weeks later.

On many vehicles the glass is also under tension in the frame and does not tolerate levering. What all of that adds up to is that a modest callout becomes a panel, a seal and an auto-electrician, which is the same arithmetic as forcing a front door and about as avoidable.

Panel vans and bakkies with canopies are frequently easier than a modern saloon rather than harder, because the mechanisms are simpler and the electronics behind the door card are less dense. Older commercial vehicles are easier again.

Where a business runs several vehicles it is worth knowing that this is one of the few things we cannot solve structurally — there is no equivalent of a master key system for a fleet from a building locksmith. A spare set held somewhere sensible is the whole of the answer.

There is a pattern to vehicle lockouts that is worth knowing, because it says something about when to be careful rather than about locks.

They cluster in car parks — the retail nodes at Nicolway and the Bryanston Shopping Centre, the office parks in Sunninghill and Woodmead, school pick-up on a Friday afternoon. The common thread is a moment of distraction while carrying something: shopping put on the seat, a boot closed with the keys in the boot, a door shut while answering a phone.
